Across the country–and right here in the Bay Area–queer and trans youth face relentless attacks from outspoken opponents seeking to make them feel unwelcome in their own communities. This constant negativity takes a toll, contributing to mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, and struggles in school. The Queer Hope Institute (QHI), based at San José State University, is standing up against this wave of hate! We are dedicated to creating spaces where queer and trans youth are not just included but are celebrated—where their unique gifts are valued, and they can dream boldly about their futures.
Last year, QHI partnered with the San Mateo-Foster City School District to host the First Annual Unity Conference! 75 LGBTQ+ middle school students came to SJSU for a day of connection, learning, and inspiration with college mentors and queer and trans adults . Following the Unity Conference, attendees reported statistically significant increases in their self-confidence, feelings of belonging, and hope for the future!
This year, we’re back with Bestie Fest, and we’re aiming for twice the impact! This time, we’re partnering with Santa Clara County schools and San Mateo-Foster City to bring 150 queer and trans middle schoolers to SJSU for more fun, connection, and community!
To make Bestie Fest a success, we need your support. Your donations will help to provide transportation, meals, supplies, and goodie bags to ensure that every student has a meaningful experience. We know that right now, many of us feel helpless in the face of the negativity that queer and trans youth face: your donation for Bestie Fest is an opportunity to help ensure that kids find community and agency that they need. Together, we can ensure that queer and trans youth in the Bay Area feel united, valued, and loved. Join us in building a brighter, more inclusive future this spring by supporting Bestie Fest today!
