The SJSU Center on Ethics is committed to studying professional and applied ethics and the broader question of how we can do a better job sharing our world. In the past, we’ve hosted in-person talks and spearheaded a University-wide course in which student teams proposed initiatives to address our changing climate.
More recently, we’ve supported SJSU’s Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl and Bioethics Bowl teams and hosted virtual public talks from experts on social media moderation, vaccine hesitancy, science journalism, immigration ethics, military ethics, crime labs, ed-tech, and value-sensitive design, grappling with ethical terrain ranging from the obligations of military professionals, the ethical and legal stakes of politicizing trans identities, the ethical dimensions of our consumption of true crime, and the challenges we’d need to meet to be able to ethically revive Wooly Mammoths or extinct animal species.
This Spring, we’re hosting the inaugural West Coast Bioethics Bowl at SJSU, bringing teams from other schools in our region to debate about the ethical dimensions of new advances and persistent challenges in medicine, biotech, and the life sciences.
