The Department of African American Studies is establishing a merit-based scholarship to support incoming first-year African American Studies majors who have successfully completed the Advancement Placement (AP) African American Studies exam in high school and earned a score of 3 or better. Students who earn a 3 or better on the AP exam will receive credit for AFAM 2A and AFAM 2B placing them well on their way toward degree completion in African American Studies.
A $10,000 goal would allow the department of African American Studies to support two students with $2000 scholarships to be used toward tuition, room & board, or other fees for their first year at SJSU while also maintaining a reserve to assist additional students if needed. Ultimately, the department’s aim is to establish a $50,000 endowment so that the generated interest can be used to attract and support more incoming first year students to the African American Studies major.
