We did it! Now, let’s keep advancing understanding and change.
We are the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at San José State University, a community committed to supporting students who are determined to continue their education—even after facing academic setbacks. Through the Michael Burawoy Memorial Scholarship, we recognize the hard work, determination, and financial sacrifice of students who come back to SJSU after having been disqualified.
We are raising funds to support students who have experienced academic disqualification and have committed to returning to SJSU as sociology majors. Being disqualified can be a challenging and discouraging experience—often tied to financial strain, personal responsibilities, or unexpected life circumstances.
Students who return do so through a process during which they have little guidance and requires them to pay additional tuition .Once students have been re-admitted,many still face financial barriers that can make it difficult to stay enrolled and succeed. This scholarship, named in memory of Michael Burawoy, a sociologist who championed public higher education and bringing sociology to ever wider audiences, provides critical support at a pivotal moment, helping students focus on their studies and continue moving forward.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to fund 10 scholarships of $1,000 each.

Each scholarship represents more than financial assistance— these funds can help students, reducing the pressure that often contributes to academic hardship. And, lets them know someone is supporting them.
By supporting 10 students, we are directly contributing to increased retention, graduation, and long-term success. More importantly, we are sending a powerful message: setbacks do not define our students—their perseverance does.
Your support helps ensure that students who have worked hard to return to SJSU have the resources they need to finish what they started.
