Building Mechanical Engineers at SJSU from Day One

In SJSU Mechanical Engineering, students get formal machine-shop training in ME 41 Mechanical Engineering Design course during their junior year, then build on it in senior design. Our aim is to help students begin building and testing their own ideas much sooner.

A digital model can look perfect until a physical part reveals a problem with fit, tolerances, or assembly. Prototyping lets students hold their design, measure it, talk it through, and revise it before a project's final stages.

Your gift will help us buy Fusion Maker 36 laser cutter for ME 20 Design and Graphics, one of the first courses our students take. as well as Mechanical Engineering Design and Mechanical System Design senior and master's student projects.

Students will cut panels, brackets, fixtures, and enclosures, moving straight from CAD to a part they can test. The funds cover the laser cutter, required ventilation, safety infrastructure, initial materials, training, and an operating reserve, so students can use it safely with faculty or staff oversight.

Last year, 21 donors helped us pass our goal to connect ME students to Silicon Valley careers. Our goal of $20,000 this year will help us fund materials, training, and the reserve that keeps the laser cutter running. Help our students build from day one. Give by December 1!
