San Jose Dragon Boat is going international. In 2027, our entirely student-run SJSU club sport will send 25 student-athletes to the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver, Canada: our first international race as a team.
Everything that keeps SJDB moving is organized by students. Our members coach practices, train new paddlers, plan race lineups, manage finances, and coordinate travel. Many of them, including our president and one of our coaches, joined as complete beginners. That path from beginner to paddler to leader is the heart of our team.
Last March, 17 donors helped us race at the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival in Tempe. That trip showed us how much higher-level competition means to our paddlers, and how much community support it takes to make it possible.
Vancouver is our next step, but getting there is a real barrier. Round-trip airfare runs about $400 per paddler, or $10,000 for the team, before lodging, registration, and race-day costs.
Every $400 flies one paddler to Vancouver. Our $4,000 goal gets 10 paddlers on the plane, and our $5,000 stretch goal covers half the team's airfare, so Vancouver is a trip the whole team can make together, not only those who can most easily afford it.
Today's first-time paddlers become tomorrow's coaches, officers, and mentors. Help get them to the starting line. Give by October 31!
